This is what I would call my country song. It's a good sturdy straight ahead 1970 style acoustic attack with enough sentimentality to qualify as real country even if some of you must mention it's a California song to sleep at night. I think I'm in good company out here, this close to Bakersfield and all. It took ten minutes to write but a week of trial and error to record. go figure. I'm proud of the snare drum sounding so dry and woody. After years of "ping" it's nice to have my maple Gretsch. Now I gots "wop" for days and "ping" when I need it..... think it's maple ...I forget to be honest. It's wood for sure and it sounds great to me. This is the second of three old songs on this record. The recording is a few years' fresh. But the song has been with me for twenty years. I still like it after all these years. It was high time I recorded it proper. It's my baby and I break it out every time I play somewhere.
lyrics
I'm truckin' down the back roads
And whistling songs
I'm trucking down the back roads
Won't you come, come along
I'm hiding from the main roads
They're much too strong
I'm hiding from the main roads
Won't you come, come along
I don't know
What tomorrow brings
I might pretend sometimes for show
I'd listen to my heart if it would keep
Me warm...warm....lord I know
There's a man with a paper sign
Says take me anywhere
There's a man with a paper sign
Saying take me far... Far from here
I don't know
what tomorrow brings
I might pretend sometimes for show
I'd listen to my heart if it would keep
Me warm... Warm.. . Lord I know
I'm truckin' down the backroads
Whistling songs
I'm trucking down the back roads
Won't you come, come along
